We have almost reached the place where the term Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is known to the majority business owners many, if not most, of whom know little about what this term means. And, really, why should they? After all, most business owners are busy focusing on, well, their business, their own areas of expertise to have time to worry about such a concept as search engine optimization.
There are, however, many business owners who are blissfully unaware of this term and among those are the ones who do not have, in this day and age, a business website. Frankly, with some exceptions, I suppose, not having a business website is akin to not having a business phone number and a fax machine thirty years ago; Somewhat of a bad business decision, one might say.
Savvy business owners understand that the majority of people looking for their goods and services, are going to use the Web to find what they are looking for. Beyond that, there are more people conducting searches on their mobile devices than there are on their PC’s or laptops. This means that if you are a business-owner and you do not have a website nor a mobile-friendly version of your website, you are practically invisible to all but people walking past your business (if you have bricks and mortar) or people reading the Penny-Saver or wherever you are advertising.
Search engine optimization is the science of placing your business website in front of people using specific search terms to find your goods or services. It is also the art of determining which terms people are typing in to Google or other search engines to find your goods or services. SEO makes good use of available technologies that make it easy for these potential customers to locate your business and your goods and services. It is a must-have part of your business strategy to reach customers where they are looking for what it is you have to offer, if your business is to survive.
Fortunately, having a search engine optimized website, including a mobile-friendly website, no longer has to be associated with exorbitant cash outlays. Nor does SEO have to be about concepts or technologies that are difficult to grasp. In fact, as consumers as well as business-people, we all use search engine optimization from a customer’s point-of-view all the time. SEO is about taking these consumer behaviors and modifying and enhancing your business web presence to compliment them.
